Prepare a Plan for Your Pet IF You Were to Get Sick

Many pet owners living along the Gulf Coast have experienced some horrific storms and hurricanes. Many have made pet disaster plans should the pet owner need to evacuate out of harm’s way. Well, that is great news. However, some of us have never included our pets in our disaster plan especially when creating one that must include your pets for something like COVID-19 pandemic.

NOTE: Now is a great time to pick up your Pet Emergency Bag for just $5 available at The Haven while supplies last. First, we urge you to identify a family member not living with you and your pet, a neighbor, friend, or co-worker who will agree to care for your pet for a minimum of two weeks should you become infected with the virus or just too ill to care for your pet while you are trying to get well.

Second, gather the supplies listed below to put together your pet supply list. This will help you and your pet’s caregiver have the necessary resources to ensure your pet is well taken care of. These items include but are not limited to:

  • Name and contact information for your pet’s new emergency caregiver
  • Name and contact information for a “plan b” just in case your pet’s caregiver can’t care for your pet due to changing circumstances
  • A two week supply of your pet’s food and any special treats they like
  • Your pet’s toys, blankets, and bed
  • A fitted leash and collar (Legible ID tags on the collar are recommended. Microchips encouraged but make sure your pet’s information on the chip registration is current)
  • A clean crate that allows your pet to stand up and turn around inside it.
  • Your pet’s most current vaccination records including the name of your veterinarian and clinic
  • A minimum two-week supply of your pet’s medications, prescriptions (please include any specific instructions)
  • A note that includes any special needs instructions that will help your pet stay healthy and happy
