Volunteer FAQs
Why volunteer with The Haven? ▼Volunteers are the heartbeat of our shelter. Your time directly impacts the lives of animals in our care — improving their wellbeing, helping them get adopted, and supporting our no-kill mission for the City of Fairhope.
Are you a no-kill shelter? ▼Yes! The Haven is a 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter. We do not euthanize healthy or treatable animals. Since 2000, we have maintained a 90%+ save rate in partnership with the City of Fairhope Animal Control.
What are the age requirements to volunteer? ▼Volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer on their own. Youth volunteers must be at least 12 years old and must be accompanied by a parent/guardian volunteer. For those under 18 years of age, we offer remote do-it-yourself projects.
What is the onboarding process like? ▼After submitting your application, you’ll receive an orientation session to learn about our shelter, meet the team, and get matched with the volunteer role that fits you best. The process is simple and welcoming!
Do you offer opportunities that don’t involve handling animals? ▼Absolutely! We have many roles that don’t involve direct animal contact, including administrative support, photography, social media, fundraising, event planning, and community outreach. There’s a role for everyone.
Are there remote volunteer opportunities? ▼Yes! Remote volunteers can help with social media content, graphic design, grant writing, virtual fundraising, and DIY enrichment projects. Distance is no barrier to making a difference.
Do you require a minimum number of volunteering hours per month? ▼We don’t have a strict minimum, but consistent volunteers make the biggest impact. We ask that you commit to a schedule that works for you and communicate with us when your availability changes.
Do you offer community service hours for volunteering? ▼Yes! We are happy to provide documentation of community service hours for students, court-ordered service, and other programs. Please let us know your needs when you apply.
Do you offer volunteer opportunities for groups? ▼Yes! We welcome corporate groups, civic organizations, scout troops, and other groups. Group volunteering is a great team-building experience. Contact us to coordinate a group visit.
How do I host an event with The Haven? ▼We love community-organized events! From adoption drives to fundraising events, our team will help you plan a successful experience. Reach out through our contact page to get started.
Do you need specific items donated? ▼Yes! Our wish list changes regularly based on shelter needs. Items like blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, toys, and food are always appreciated. Check our current wish list on our website or contact us directly.
⚠️ Age Note: Individuals must be 18 years or older to volunteer on their own. Youth volunteers must be at least 12 years old and must be accompanied by a parent/guardian volunteer. For those under 18 years of age, we offer remote do-it-yourself projects.
