Legacy, love and pet adoptions come together at The Haven’s 3rd annual Dr. Diane Camilleri, VMD Adoption Event

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (May 6, 2025) – The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter, in partnership with JHS Bookstore, will host the third annual Dr. Diane Camilleri, VMD Adoption Event on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at JHS Bookstore in Foley. The event celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Diane Camilleri, VMD, a veterinarian whose career and passion was all about helping pets and people in need.

The late Dr. Camilleri co-founded JHS Books with her husband of 25 years, John Soderberg. The couple shared a love for animals, literature, travel, and service to others. Following Dr. Camilleri’s passing on Sept. 18, 2022, Soderberg established the Dr. Diane Camilleri, VMD Rescue Fund at The Haven in 2023 to honor her lifelong commitment to animal welfare.

Now in its third year, the adoption event is hosted by JHS Bookstore now named Legacy Books LLC, operated by Niels, Olivia and Mackenzie Hansen—Dr. Camilleri’s family members. Soderberg remains an active supporter of The Haven, and the bookstore is proud to continue this tradition in her memory.

“We’re so excited to partner with The Haven and Uncle John to make this day full of love, laughter and new beginnings for these amazing pets,” said Niels Hansen of Legacy Books LLC. “This event is a beautiful way to honor Aunt Diane’s love for animals and the joy she brought to everyone.”

Attendees can meet adoptable dogs and cats, enjoy face painting, sample treats, and cheer on adoptable pets during their “Pet’s on the Red Carpet”. Reduced adoption fees will be offered during the event, and each adopted pet will go home with a starter kit including food, toys and helpful resources for new pet parents. All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and more.

Community members who are unable to adopt are encouraged to attend and support The Haven by making a donation in Dr. Camilleri’s honor, donating supplies like paper towels, cat or kitten food, or sharing the event with others.
